 Wayne Campbell, the Head Trainer & Equipment Manager, has undertaken Therapy services since 1987 believing that if a college is to have a varsity program, there should be a trainer. Injuries sustained by athletes are to be handled properly and expeditiously with the objective of returning the athlete safely to play. Internally, Wayne is able to monitor and lead the athlete through progressive stages of rehabilitation and have confidence placing the athlete back in the game. This is a win-win situation for the athlete and the team (coach included).
Since 1987 Wayne has upgraded the Therapy Room, purchased new equipment for rehabilitation and education purposes. The room is equipped with a taping table, 2 treatment tables, ultrasound and muscle stimulation machines, T.E.N.S. machine, ice machine, refrigerator, cold and hot hydro collators, standard whirlpool, two stationary bikes, exercise mats, resistance tubing, dumbbells, ankle weights, medicine balls and much more. The weight room, gymnasium and pool are also used for rehabilitation.
Three student assistants (one being coop) are hired from the University of Windsor to assist Wayne in varsity medical coverage during practices and games. All carry First Aid and CPR certificates and have some clinical experience, requiring additional training on sports injuries and other emergencies relating to sports injuries.
Allied health care professionals are also called upon and they include chiropractors, massage therapists, orthopedic surgeons, podiatrist, etc. Walk in clinics and Emergency Rooms are also used.
Varsity Athletes are the primary concern, however full-time students attending college can see Wayne and have their injuries taken care of free of charge. In addition to being a sports injury specialist, Wayne is available for consultation regarding weight-training programs, basic nutrition, general health and fitness guidelines.
An average year deals with up to 200 athletes including training camp with around 150 - 160 athletes that are on the teams. Visiting athletes from other colleges are also treated when they visit for varsity play and use the Sport Therapy Room Services.
