- Submitted by

Quebec City, QC – The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team won their final game at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship in Quebec City Saturday afternoon by defeating Mount Saint Vincent University (Halifax, NS) by a score of 73-65 at Cégep de Sainte-Foy.  This concludes one of the finest seasons in Saints Women’s Basketball history and marks the first program victory on the national stage with a final placing of 7th in Canada.

The Saints started well and were ahead 21-14 after the opening quarter with 2nd year point guard Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) leading the charge with 11 points in the frame.  St. Clair continued to pull away holding Mount Saint Vincent to just 8 points in the second quarter and enjoyed a 35-22 advantage at the halftime intermission.  But Mount Saint Vincent responded in third quarter putting up 31 points and tied the game on two occasions as the Saints weathered the storm to hold a slim 55-53 lead moving to the last period.  St. Clair was able to fend off foul trouble and with some timely baskets from rookie guard Hayley Firr (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) grew their lead to as much as 11 points down the stretch which was enough to secure the win.

St. Clair shot 41% (7-17) from deep in the first half which created enough of a cushion on their way to 10 three point baskets in the game.  But the Saints’ defense was the difference holding Mount Saint Vincent to under 20% shooting from distance and under 30% overall from the floor while forcing 21 turnovers.

Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) capped a very productive championship and led the Saints in scoring again with 20 points but was joined by three teammates in double figures.  Anna Ulicny finished with 16 points and added 8 rebounds and 4 assists.  Noor Bazzi (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) was named the St. Clair Player of the Game scoring 13 points and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds as well as 5 assists.  Kiersten Tomkins (Sarnia, ON) also reached double figures with 12 points to go with 7 rebounds and 5 steals.

For her efforts Jana Kucera was named a 2nd team Championship All-Star selection and averaged 25.7 points per game which put her among the leaders in the tournament.
