The St. Clair College Saints mixed curling team won a Bronze Medal at the OCAA Provincial Curling Championships on Sunday. The four day event was hosted by Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario at the Soo Curlers Club.
The Saints lost a close match in the semi-final to Seneca College on Sunday morning and had to settle for the bronze. It was a back and forth match with the score 3-3 heading into the 7th end. Sececa took 2 points in the 7th with the hammer and then the Saints were forced to take some chances in the final end to try and even the game but ended up giving up 3 points to lose by a score of 8-3. It was a much closer game then the score indicated. Seneca went on to win the gold medal easily. It was the 4th consecutive year that St. Clair has received a medal in mixed curling. It was the 7th medal in the past 8 years for the mixed team as well.
St. Clair ended up 3-2 in round robin play to finish in third place out of six teams. They lost to Seneca and the silver medal winner, Fanshawe in round robin play. Members of the bronze medal winning team are skip Graeme Robson, vice Alaina Frayne, second Ryan Brook, lead Katharine Rusk, and spare Victoria McKinlay. The Saints are coached by head coach Jim Brackett and assistant coach Max Fusco.
The St. Clair men's team had a strong championship as well. They ended up with a round robin record or 4-4 and ended up tied for fourth place out of nine teams; one spot out of a semi final berth and medal. Had the men won their final game on Saturday evening they would have advanced to the semi finals and been guaranteed a medal but they came up just short. Members of the men's team are skip Sean Boyle, vice Jordan Way, second Dale Winch, lead Alex Zappio and spare Jeff Smith.
