Dion Named OCAA Baseball Player of the Year
Oshawa, ON – St. Clair's Kevin Dion (Newmarket, ON) became the 3rd Saint to win the OCAA Baseball Player of the Year award after receiving the distinction at the Championship Banquet held Thursday evening at the Oshawa Convention Centre.
Dion batted 0.368 this fall which was 8th in the league but became the OCAA's hit king earlier this season surpassing the mark set by former teammate Crannel Jerald (2013-16). Dion currently sits at 90 career hits and is a 4th year student in St. Clair's Event Management program having already earned a diploma in Advertising and Marketing Communications.
Dion was 3rd overall in hits (25), RBI's (15) and runs scored (17) this season but topped the league in triples (3), total bases (34), plate appearances (72) and at-bats (68). Dion mainly played a terrific shortstop for the Saints but saw time in the outfield as the versatile athlete was never out of the line-up appearing in all 20 games.
Miguel Cienfuegos (Laval, QC) was also recognized as an OCAA All-Star who earned that award as a Designated Hitter batting 0.325 with a league leading on-base percentage of 0.500. He also was a top pitcher in the league with a 3-1 record with a sparkling 1.88 ERA while being 2nd in strikeouts (35) and strikeouts per 9 innings (9.42).
St. Clair begins its 5-time OCAA Championship title defense on Friday when they face host Durham College at 1:30pm. The 4-team double-knockout format is being hosted at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium in Oshawa. See below a Championship tournament schedule along with a live stream link.
